It looks like winter is here again, for a few days anyway. If you have access to an indoor facility, consider yourself lucky. We’ve had the chance to skate some good ramps this winter (Josh E, Hart House, etc) but there’s nothing like pushing around on concrete.
Since we can’t skate outdoors for a while, here is a shot of an old spot that’s no longer around. The HiFi Club barrier was fun for a solid couple of years.

There’s a newish double set up at the University. It’s aptly named “The Black Hand” because it’s at a building that has an ominous looking black hand painted on the side of it. The set is no joke, either. 5-flat-3, some cobblestone up top but with a solid take off and landing. The rail is a relatively low double-kink. Landing is kind of half on/half off so bringing wood is a good idea.

The folks at the City have installed some nice new benches at Millennium Park. There’s a nice curved bench and an up bench too. Check the evidence below:

The curved bench looks sick to sesh.

It’s in the “expert AKA BMX” area of the park, right near the deep end of the clover bowl.

This weather has been great and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we won’t get any more snow. Who are we kidding? It’s Calgary so I’m sure we’ll get a blizzard in June or something like that. We will be hitting this spot (yes, it is near Calgary) as soon as it’s clear and ready to roll. Photos courtesy MHSA.

From secret spots from days gone by to spots that are still going strong, the dam/spillway thing in Northwest Calgary is kind of an intimidating one. It has the potential for a lot of speed but the large gaps (and rocks) can make achieving that speed difficult. If you don’t know where this spot is, here’s a hint: Google Maps. Enjoy these photos by Tim Smith.

For the inaugaural post on Calgaryskateboarding.com, we thought we’d pay our respects to a fun Calgary spot from a couple years back: the Jankhouse.
If you ever got the chance to skate this semi-secret spot, consider yourself lucky. Never has a bunch of junk been assembled in such a fun way.

The conditions were certainly hazardous.
