The City of Calgary is rolling out the Mobile Parks again this year. It gets going on June 27th at Village Square Leisure Centre and moves around to every quandrant of the City for at least a week at a time. The big change from past years is, it’s FREE! The dudes from the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association are good friends of C.A.S.E. and some of them are involved in putting on some skate camps this summer. The camp has a great street course and is also home to the now legendary snake run that will make a man out of anyone who can hold on for the whole ride. Here’s what they say about their camps:
A Christian organization called Eagles Nest Ranch and some local Medicine Hat skateboarders are teaming up to do a skateboard camp focused entirely for skateboarders. This camp is made by skateboarders for skateboarders. It is based on not only the regular habits of a skater, but the regular wants and needs of one. With late nights and late mornings, this camp is exactly what you’re looking for.
The idea of this camp is to bring all the skateboarders from Western Canada together into one area to get to know each other. This is an outreach camp and will have a Christian aspect to it. It is minimal cost and minimal effort. It will be great for team building and for all skaters to meet and hang out. Another bonus is that kids are going to come to “Beat The Heat” our July 1st skateboard competition with $5000 for first.
Dates: June 28th – July 1st
Since the weather is finally conducive to skateboarding outside, this is a good time to become acquainted with the City of Calgary’s by-laws as they apply to skateboarding.
If you check out this link, you will notice that skateboarding on city sidewalks is legal, provided it’s not in the “Central Traffic Zone” (essentially all of downtown). Skateboarding on any city street is technically not legal. Skateboarding is allowed on all city pathways, provided you’re not doing anything “unsafe to other people” and not breaking the other pathway rules (speed limit 20 Km/h, pass on the left, etc). You can see the pathway by-laws here.
Most importantly, you can’t skate anywhere where there is a “no skateboarding” sign (duh). This includes places like Stephen Avenue Mall and in front of the Kerby Centre (8th Ave SW between 10th St. and 11th St.)
Technically, permission from the owner is needed to skate on private property.
As long as you’re aware of these rules, are courteous to other people, and use some common sense, you should be able to “street skate” without any problems.
The new issue of SBC Skateboard (Summer 2009) has a bit of Calgary coverage. Both Sean MacAlister and Drew Merriman have shots from Spain. Drew and Geoff Strelow each have a “Recognize”.
Here are some shots from the Blind video premiere last week. Thanks to Vannessa Conley for the photos and Mission for donating the proceeds from the premiere to C.A.S.E.
