CASE submitted a proposal for the Expression of Interest in “Developing, Promoting and Operating, an Arts, Culture and/or Heritage Facility” in the former Science Centre building.
Unfortunately, CASE was not successful in our bid. We proposed that a portion of this building would make an excellent skatepark, both with its actual layout and proximity to Millennium Park.
We’re keeping our eyes and ears open for potential indoor skatepark locations. It’s not an easy thing to accomplish, considering every indoor skatepark that has existed in Calgary is now closed. We’re also communicating with successful proponents of indoor skateparks in other Candian cities.
The Skate Cafe is hosting a best trick contest on Sunday, March 23rd [there is a typo on the poster]. Cash and prizes are up for grabs! Check the poster for details.
“The City of Calgary is seeking to commission an artist and/or artist team to participate in the first phase of implementation for the Skateboard Amenities Strategy. The selected artist(s) will consult and work with the design team (external consultants and City staff) to explore creative visioning for the overall park designs, determine the scope of possibilities for public art within the selected sites, and develop and implement a project plan based on those possibilities. Community-based and temporary public art initiatives are desired.”
Click this link to find out more. The deadline for submissions is February 24th.
We had great turn outs with lots of CASE members, parents, City councillors, community association representatives, and just people who are generally interested in the progress of the Skatepark Amenities Strategy and skateboarding in Calgary.
HUGE Response To Survey Needed!
From here, the City and the skatepark consultants will choose which sites to move ahead with development. You can still influence which skateparks are built by voicing your opinion in the Placespeak survey, only available until February 14th. This is an opportunity for you to give specific comments, ideas, and feedback about the strategy and about the specific locations being proposed.
We need a HUGE response from everyone who wants to see more skateparks in Calgary so please share the survey link with everyone you know who supports more skateparks for Calgary!.

Thanks to everyone who came out to last night’s skatepark open house at Cardel Theatre. It was the first of three, so please try to make it to one of the other open houses.
If you didn’t make it, these two news stories will give you a better idea of what you missed:
