City of Calgary Skatepark Open Houses

We’re happy to let you know that the City of Calgary is holding three open houses at the end of January to provide information and see if the public supports potential skatepark sites. Please note: these are potential sites only and no approvals or decisions regarding any site have been made.

At the open houses, you can learn more about:

-the consultants that are designing the skateparks
-communities that have been identified to receive a skatepark and why
-how this could impact you or your family
-modern skatepark design, construction, and the positive impact they have on communities
-how your community or region can get involved for selection of future parks

There are three dates for the open houses, all at different locations but all run from 5PM-8PM:

-Tuesday, January 28: Cardel Theatre – 180 Quarry Park Blvd S.E.
-Wednesday, January 29: Edgemont Community Association – 33 Edgevalley Circle N.W.
-Thursday, January 30: Southland Leisure Centre – 2000 Southland Dr. S.W.

Paskapoo Slopes Survey Results

Earlier this year, we asked you to complete a survey about the Paskapoo Slopes area of land near COP. The City of Calgary has released the results of the survey.

Paskapoo Slopes

Although a skatepark isn’t likely going to be built on Paskapoo Slopes any time soon, it looks like skateboarding made a large impact in the survey and features prominently in the survey results.
Thanks to everyone who completed the survey and recommended a skatepark. It’s through raising awareness that we are finally seeing traction and are on our way to new skateparks in Calgary.

City Announces Winning Firm for Skateboard Amenities Strategy Implementation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

November 1st, 2013

CITY OF CALGARY ANNOUNCES WINNING FIRM FOR SKATEBOARD AMENITIES STRATEGY IMPLEMENTATION

(Calgary, AB),

The City of Calgary (Recreation) has announced that Van der Zalm & Associates has been selected to implement the city’s 10-year Skateboard Amenities Strategy.

The 10-year Calgary Skateboard Amenities Strategy recommends approximately 270,000 square feet of future concrete skatepark development, spread over every quadrant. The sizes of the future skateparks will vary from small “skate spots” to larger “neighbourhood size” parks. These future parks will cater to every style and skill level of skaters; terrain will vary across the many parks.
The Calgary Association of Skateboarding Enthusiasts (C.A.S.E.) is excited about today’s announcement. “We’ve been working very hard for many years towards the goal of new facilities. This announcement confirms this goal will soon be a reality. This is great news for Calgary skateboarders and we’re looking forward to riding new parks in 2014,” says C.A.S.E. co-chair, Josh Etherington.

The actual number of parks has yet to be determined. However, over 25 communities have expressed interest in developing skateparks in their areas. C.A.S.E. will be working with Van der Zalm & Associates and City of Calgary Recreation to engage the local skateboarding community at a series of public input meetings beginning early 2014.
A copy of the 10-year Skateboard Amenities Strategy and a list of interested communities can be found on the C.A.S.E. website. Information on the public input meetings will be posted on calgary.ca as well as the C.A.S.E. website.
