2019 New Skateparks Update

The City of Calgary is building three new skateparks in 2019: Bowness, Genesis Centre, and Rocky Ridge. Great news for Calgary skateboarding!

Bowness skatepark is under construction. It began late in 2018 and the crew from New Line Skateparks worked under a heated tent for a few months to complete most of the work. It just needs a bit more minor work before it opens this spring.

The park is located in Queen Elizabeth Park (4324 77 St NW). Here are some concept images of the design (click either image for more):

Construction on the Genesis Centre skatepark will begin after Bowness is complete. New Line is the contractor and construction will likely take about three months. The site is the front of the Genesis Centre YMCA, 7555 Falconridge Blvd NE. Here is the concept image (click below for more):

Rocky Ridge Skatepark will be located at the new Shane Homes YMCA, 11300 Rocky Ridge Rd NW. Construction will start up a little later than Genesis and hopefully will be done in late fall. Here’s a 2-D sketch of the design concept:

CASE Co-Founder Selected for 2019 Faces of Community!

Zev Klymochko co-founded CASE over 10 years ago and is still committed to pushing Skateboarding in Calgary. He was recently nominated and selected as one of Calgary’s 2019 Faces of Community for his outstanding volunteer contributions.

A big congratulations to Zev for some well-deserved recognition! Head over to the Federation of Calgary Communities to see the full interview:

City Proposes Allowing Downtown Skateboarding

The City of Calgary’s Standing Policy Committee on Transportation and Transit will review recommendations to the Transportation bylaw from City administration on Wednesday, February 27th. These recommendations include allowing skateboarding downtown and in the bike lanes/cycle track.

CASE is supportive of these recommendations and will attend the Committee meeting to express our support.

Here’s a look at some of the proposed changes:

You may know that skateboarding downtown or what’s known as the “Central Traffic Zone” has always carried a $25 fine. We contacted the City’s Bylaw department and they told us that since 2001, only 13 tickets had been issued.

This classic cartoon from the Calgary Sun circa 1993 is still relevant today!
