The City of Calgary Recreation & CASE would like to thank everyone who took the time to complete the 2011 Skateboard Preference survey. We heard from over 900 skateboard enthusiasts and supporters. The data collected has been synthesized and will inform portions of the Skateboard Amenity Strategy being presented to Standing Policy Committee on Community & Protective Services in November. Please check back for updates on the progress of the report to Council and detailed findings of the survey.

The Future of Skateparks
Posted On Sep 27 2011, 10:55 AM by asayer

Could this be the future of skateparks? Big name designers, WiFi, graffitti walls, concert stage, climbing wall, and more all housed under thermal canopies that allow skating year round no matter what mother nature is throwing down. Sounds like just the thing Canada needs.
Selgas Cano completed the Merida Factory Youth Movement in Spain this summer and the thinking behind it is quite ground breaking. With skateboarding more in the mainstream then ever it probably won’t be long before skateparks start getting worked into cities urban design plans more often.
Write-up and pics (unless otherwise mentioned) from Juxtapoz:
“Built by architectural firm Selgas Cano in Merida Spain, Merida Factory Youth Movement, is an all-encompassing fun zone for kids and young adults. Completed this year, the project includes a skatepark, concert hall, rock climbing, theatre, ballroom, and even broadband Internet. The entire building is covered under a large thermal canopy, allowing use in all weather conditions. Open to anyone and beautifully designed.”
From the Sylvan Lake Skatepark Association:
“Construction To Start Soon: Sylvan Lake Alberta Town Council approved the proposed skatepark in tonight’s meeting, meaning construction will begin soon! Sylvan Lake skateboarders and BMXers will soon be stoked to ride their own skatepark. More details to come! In the words of a famous Sylvan Lake sage, “long live the scene!”
